Classic 350 vs Avenger 220 vs Renegade Sport S
Classic 350 vs Avenger 220 vs Renegade Sport S Comparison Review:
Pros:
Royal Enfield Classic 350: High torque engine, highest cubic capacity engine in the class, simple design.
Bajaj Avenger 220: Anti-friction seal for front suspensions, multi-spoke alloy wheels, wider rear tire, tubeless tires can be retro fitted, driving comfort, low weight.
UM Renegade Sport S: Widest rear tire in class, longest wheel base in segment, OEM fitted tubeless tires, dual tone colors, large fuel tank capacity.
Cons:
Royal Enfield Classic 350: High engine oil quantity, high vehicle weight, low ground clearance, bad quality chrome, lowest fuel tank capacity, niggling quality issues.
Bajaj Avenger 220: Lowest cubic capacity engine.
Performance and Tractability:
The Royal Enfield Classic 350 has its roots from the Standard 350 which used to have cast iron engine crank case and cylinder block. The current Royal Enfield Classic 350 has been upgraded to all aluminium engine which make it more lighter but tends to loose the performance on the engine vibrations. At lower engine speeds the Royal Enfield Classic 350 generates quite good torque which helps the bike to move easily up-to 3rd gear under 30 kmph without hiccups. But the Classic 350 is not meant to do higher speeds as the bike drive-line NVH will make you uncomfortable above 90 kmph speeds. Talking about the Bajaj Avenger 220, it shares the same engine of the Pulsar 220. But the Bajaj Avenger is tuned with a smaller jet carburetor to optimize the fuel efficiency. Bajaj Avenger 220 can also be driven at lower engine speeds without hesitation, thanks to the tall gear ratios designed by Bajaj. Bajaj Avenger manages to do 0-100kmph in about 13 seconds which is decent number, the Avenger 220 is quite vibes free motorcycle, now we have a new challenger in this league named the UM, which is a American-Chinese brand entering into the Indian motorcycle industry. The UM Renegade Sport S motorcycle has an high reeving engine compared to the other two motorcycles. The Renegade Sport S actually sits in-between the other two competitors motorcycles on the engine torque generation capabilities. But the Renegade Sport S does generate highest horse power compared to the other two, at about 3000 rpm higher engine speed of the Classic 350. But talking about the performance of the UM motorcycles, it has a refined engine which takes you from 0-100 kmph in about 9.2 seconds which is a incredible number for UM motorcycle configuration in competition to the Bajaj Avenger 220 as the Avenger weighs 22 kg lesser. Again at low speeds the Renegade Sport S has a great tractability which comes without any vibrations to the rider, you can easily shit to 4th gear under 40kmph speed in the city commuting conditions.

Comfort and ergonomics:
On the Comfort side the RE Classic 350 has a complete different rider seat design, it has the old school single saddle seat, which is integrated with springs under the cushion for better comfort. Going over rough patches on the RE Classic 350 is quite smooth for the rider, the rider also has a upright posture to avoid any injuries in long journeys. The rear seat on the RE Classic 350 can be removed for a retro look, but talking about the rear seat comfort, it is not sufficient for the pillion rider for longer journeys. Pillion rider seat on the RE Classic 350 is too narrow and does not have any options for back rest support.
On the other hand the Bajaj Avenger 220, it has a long one piece saddle for both rider and the pillion, the pillion on the Avenger 220 sits few centimeter higher than the rider in front. The saddle cushion on the Avenger 220 is awesomely designed, it really has a wide space for all sizes of you know what. On the Avenger 220 rider posture is very much upright but to reach the foot pegs you need to put your feet forward as if riding a car. Avenger 220 is one of the best budget cruising motorcycle in India. One major concern on the Bajaj Avenger 220 is that if you are riding in dense traffic conditions and occasionally end-up doing U-turns, it can be very difficult to manage the situation's due to its longer wheel base. UM Renegade Sport S also has a similar saddle as the Avenger 220 but the pillion seat has a lesser cushion which does not has good support the pillion rider. UM Renegade also has the similar maneuverability in the city due to its excess wheel base than the avenger and higher weight than the RE Classic 350.

Styling:
Talking about the styling of these three bikes, the RE Classic 350 has a different motorcycle all together, the RE Classic 350 is something like Brat motorcycle category, you have bigger diameter steel wheels with multiple spokes, wider looking fuel tank and a higher seating height. But the Bajaj Avenger 220 and the UM Renegade sport S are completely different as their genes are carried from the long journey cruiser with higher rake angle for higher stability. Both the motorcycles have a flowy design from start to end of the machines, on top of that the fuel gauge of the Avenger 220 is placed on the fuel tank of the bike. On the Renegade Sport S the headlamp has a cowl resembling to the Suzuki Intruder which makes the bike stand out from the rest and feels premium. The Avenger 220 is recently offered in matte green color as well but the Renegade Sport S is offer in dual tone colors which is new offering in this category of motorcycles. On the UM Renegade Sport S the side panels look odd as they do not flow with the bikes design theme and appear to be something bought-out item. The Avenger 220 and the Renegade Sport S both come with multi spoke alloy wheels which gives a premium feel to both the motorcycles.
Features:
On this area the Royal Enfield Classic 350 lags much, as their is nothing much exiting to offer as a feature, the bike has a conventional looking speedo-meter with high-beam and indicator tell-tales. Besides that the Classic 350 has an ampere meter gauge, god know for what it is present cause it does not add any value to the customer while riding. Whereas on the Avenger 220 the new speedo-meter cluster looks quite attractive with the fusion of analog and digital readout. The Avenger 220 fork seals are actually friction less seals which will help to increase fork pipes life in long runs. On the Renegade Sport S is provided with USB mobile charging port which is practical but we still dont know how reliable is it in the long run of the vehicle as it will be exposed to water ingress. UM Renegade Sport S also had led lamps under the fuel tank facing in forward direction for better visibility in dark while cornering. One important think about these motorcycles is that the RE Classic 350 is equipped with only 13.5 Ltrs of fuel tank capacity whereas the UM Renegade Sport S is a real cruising motorcycle as it has about 18 Ltrs of fuel tank.
Fuel Efficiency:
The RE Classic 350 turns out to be most fuel efficient among-st the other two motorcycles giving a mileage of about 37kmpl in mixed driving conditions, the Bajaj Avenger 220 goes down to 34kmpl but the real low numbers are scored by the UM Renegade which are about 32kmpl which is due to highest weight and widest rear tire.
Fuel Efficiency:
Avenger 220 - 35-45 kmpl
Renegade Sport S - 30-40 kmpl
Fuel Cost (for usage of 75,000 km):
RE Classic 350 - 138000 Rs
Bajaj Avenger 220 - 150000 Rs
UM Renegade Sport S - 159000 Rs
Reliability & After Sales Service:
Reliability & After Sales Service:
Still after so many years of legacy in the country the a Royal Enfield bikes reliability is questionable, on the service part also it does not score a great number. Avenger 220 has better reliability compared to both the bikes but again Bajaj dealers are not well educated about the issues related to the bike. On the UM side, LML is supporting the brand to establish in India, as we know LML for long time now and their poor support and quality issues which they have demonstrated in some previous products. We expect LML does not use the same strategy in upbringing the UM brand in India.
Resale & Cost of Ownership:
Purchasing a Royal Enfield motorcycle in India has become a prestige issue now, even if you don't understand anything about motorcycles you can go and buy a one and become an icon. Hence the resale of the Royal Enfield motorcycles is very good except the Continental and the Himalayan. Bajaj bikes never had a great resale value, but Bajaj has raised the bars and progressed in terms of quality at low price. UM still remains a question which will need some time to mature in the market.
Resale Price (after 5-7 years, 60,000 km):
RE Classic 350 - 85000 Rs
Bajaj Avenger 220 - 40000 Rs
UM Renegade Sport S - 80000 Rs
Total Cost of Ownership (Price + Fuel Cost - Resale Price):
RE Classic 350 - 201000 Rs
Bajaj Avenger 220 - 205000 Rs
UM Renegade Sport S - 274875 Rs
Verdict:
If it's not about prestige, Bajaj Avenger 220 is our choice due to its practicality and cost to own it.
